Civil Engineering "The APWA scholarship gave me the opportunity to complete my education at San Diego State University without any loans. I graduated in August 2022 with a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering. Thanks to the scholarship, I was able to focus on my education without having to worry how I was going to pay for it. Also, because of the amazing people that are part of the association, I was fortunate enough to meet a lot of people who already recognized my name out there and gave me an opportunity to start new conversations and network. While I was in my last semester at SDSU, I had a student engineer position with the City of San Diego. I was working in the Public Utilities Department and I met amazing people that helped me grow in my career and get real life experience in the Engineering field. As of now, I am a junior engineer with the City of San Diego in the Transportation Department."

Christine Pelayo The APWA Scholarship has been such an immense help for me as a civil engineering student in a public university undergoing an overwhelming financial transition. With its additional money and support from many other public work employees and employers, I can afford class materials, programs, and additional university costs without having to worry whether it is burdening me or my family. It was additionally interesting to network with other professionals in my field and learn about their experiences in the field; it released a sense of inspiration and passion as it made me dazzled about what kind of projects I could do in the future and how I could make a difference in the world like them someday. Overall, I would really recommend applying to this scholarship if you’re a prospective Public Works student, as you could make really powerful connections and receive a lot of financial support that’s crucial in college.
