The APWA Sustainable Transportation Subcommittee has three vacancies it is looking to fill. The subcommittee's mission is to provide the latest information to APWA members on best practices in areas including energy and fuels; green materials, reduced impact facilities and programs, alternatives to driving alone and sustainable land use patterns. The subcommittee is seeking individuals to gather information from leading practitioners and get the word out via APWA's educational programs: web-seminars, news articles, workshops and Congress sessions. The APWA National Congress will be in Anaheim in 2012. This is a huge benefit for our chapter, since the Congress will be so close to us. Your staff will have access to the "greatest show in public works" in their own backyard.  The Southern California Chapter is hosting the Congress, and Congress is only a couple of years away. They are asking for help from the San Diego and Ventura Chapters to partner with them to make it a successful Congress. It’s going to be a busy couple of years for them, and both chapters offered to cooperate and help with all of our resources, including people to volunteer, and fund raising for the host activities and events. A Plan Unveiled: The U.S. Bicycle Route SystemA year ago, the American Association of State Highway andTransportation Officials (AASHTO) approved a national corridor plan for anofficial U.S. Bicycle Route System. The plan is a blueprint for anurban/suburban/rural network of bicycle routes connecting all parts of thecontinental U.S. - potentially the largest cycling network in the world.Now, some states are starting to turn the plan into reality by definingnew U.S. routes and levying support from all levels of transportation andgovernment. APWA's International Affairs Committee (IAC) has working partnerships with several public works organizations across the globe. One of the organizations that the IAC has been collaborating with is ICLEI-Mexico (http://www.iclei.org.mx/), an affiliate of ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability (http://www.iclei.org/). ICLEI is an association of over 1100 local governments from 67 countries who are committed to sustainable practices and development. ICLEI provides technical consulting, training and information services to promote sustainability at the local level. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!  The Handlery Hotel & Resort, the long-time location for the San Diego Section general meeting and luncheon, will be closing for renovations/remodeling for three months.   This closing will impact the APWA meeting location for the months of: December 2009, January 2010 and February 2010.  During these months, the Chapter will meet at the Crowne Plaza San Diego, 2270 Hotel Circle North, San Diego, CA 92108.  The meeting will be held at the same time and will be the same cost to members.  The November 2009 meeting will still be held at the Handlery Hotel & Resort. It contains all the latest changes that have beenresearched and approved by a 25-member committee, with representatives from theAmerican Public Works Association, the Associated General Contractors of California,the Engineering Contractors Association, and the Southern California ContractorsAssociation.Topics of Discussion:The Nov 6th workshop will promote the use and understanding of the "Greenbook".  Highlight and discuss various general provisions, their relationship to the Public Contract Code &their implementation during contract administration.  Discuss how to use the "Greenbook" as the Standard Specifications for most public works projects through proper preparation of complementary special provisions.  Improve the consistency and uniformity of special provisions among the various users of the "Greenbook".Date and Time: Nove [ ... ]
